Blowgun
A silent tube weapon firing poison darts
The blowgun is a weapon that propels poison darts through a thin tube of 100-300cm by blowing with the mouth. The weapon itself has virtually no lethality — it only becomes effective with poisoned darts (curare, plant toxins, etc.). Effective range of only 10-30m, but its near-silent discharge makes it ideal for ambush and surprise attacks. Independently developed by hunting peoples in tropical/subtropical regions: South American Amazon, Southeast Asian Borneo, and Japan's fukiya. Curare poison paralyzes respiratory muscles; without poison, the darts are not lethal even to small animals.
Origin
A hunting weapon independently developed in the Amazon, Southeast Asia, and Japan. Evolved in tropical/subtropical environments where abundant plant-based toxins were available.
Features
- Thin, long tube (100-300cm)
- Mouth-blown poison dart propulsion
- Virtually harmless without poison
- Effective range approximately 10-30m
- Nearly silent discharge
- Poison (curare/plant toxins) essential for effectiveness
Usage
Primarily used to hunt small animals like monkeys and birds in tropical rainforest canopies. Near-silent operation makes it ideal for ambush.
