Ō-yoroi
Grand armor of the Japanese samurai
The ō-yoroi (大鎧) is the traditional grand armor of the Japanese samurai, constructed from small lamellar plates (kozane) laced together with colorful silk cord (odoshige) and finished with leather and silk. Designed for mounted archery, it featured wide right-arm mobility and large shoulder guards (ō-sode). Used from the Heian to Muromachi period (10th-15th century), it weighed 25-30kg and was gradually replaced by lighter armor as infantry tactics evolved.
