Armet

Close-fitting Italian helmet of the 15th century

The armet was a close-fitting combat helmet originating in 15th-century Italy, successor to the bascinet and the standard helm of full plate armor suits. Its streamlined profile hugged the head precisely, with hinged cheek pieces that opened to allow donning before clamping shut for battle. A visor could be raised for visibility or lowered for full facial protection. Milanese armorers produced the finest examples, and the armet's deflective design represented the pinnacle of medieval helmet engineering before being superseded by the close helmet in the mid-16th century.
