Kabuto
Traditional helmet of the Japanese samurai
The kabuto (兜) is the traditional helmet of the Japanese samurai, composed of three key elements: the shikoro (neck guard plates), fukigaeshi (turnbacks), and maedate (front crest). During the Sengoku period, warlords crafted distinctive maedate to project authority on the battlefield — Tokugawa Ieyasu's fern leaf crest and Date Masamune's crescent moon being among the most famous. Weighing 2-5kg, the kabuto combined practical head protection with powerful visual symbolism.
