Chief god of Norse mythology and father of gods and men (Allfather). Rules over wisdom, poetry, war, death, runes, and magic. He sacrificed one eye at Mimir's Well for cosmic wisdom and hung himself on Yggdrasil for nine nights to learn the runes. He gathers fallen warriors (Einherjar) in Valhalla to prepare for Ragnarök.
Origin
Grandson of the primordial giant Búri and son of Borr and Bestla. With his brothers Vili and Vé, he slew the primal giant Ymir and fashioned the world from his body. Forever seeking wisdom, he sacrifices flesh and life itself.
Features
- One-eyed old man in blue cloak and broad-brimmed hat
- Spear Gungnir, which never misses its mark
- Ravens Huginn (thought) and Muninn (memory) on his shoulders
- Rides Sleipnir, the eight-legged horse
Stories
Patron of warriors, kings, poets, and rune-magicians. Invoked before battle for victory, in rune-divination, and in oaths. He determines which souls journey to Valhalla.
