Hades
Hades · Greek God of the Underworld — King of the Dead
Greek god of the underworld and ruler of the dead. Brother of Zeus and Poseidon, not numbered among the Twelve Olympians but their equal in power. Stern, just, and reputedly miserly, he rules over the realm of souls — not death itself. He is famed for abducting Persephone to be his queen.
Origin
Swallowed by Cronus and freed by Zeus, Hades fought in the Titanomachy. By lot he received the underworld. Rarely leaving his realm, he became lord of both the dead and of subterranean wealth — minerals, gemstones, and seed grain.
Features
- Stern, mature god wreathed in shadow
- The Helm of Darkness (kynee) grants invisibility
- Accompanied by the three-headed hound Cerberus
- Bears a scepter and the cornucopia of plenty
Stories
Invoked in funerals, burial rites, and agricultural fertility (the buried seed). His true name was avoided; he was called Plouton (the Rich One) instead. Patron of miners and farmers.
