Heimdall
Heimdall · Watchman of Bifröst — Trumpeter of Ragnarök
Eternal watchman of the rainbow bridge Bifröst in Norse myth. His superhuman senses span all Nine Worlds — he hears grass and wool grow. When Ragnarök begins, he sounds the great horn Gjallarhorn to wake the gods.
Origin
Born of Nine Mothers in a mysterious tale; some say he is also a son of Odin. In one myth he visited Midgard and fathered the three classes of humans — noble, free, and thrall.
Features
- Shining god with teeth of gold
- Needs no sleep — wakes faster than any bird
- Gjallarhorn — its blast carries through all Nine Worlds
- Rides Gulltoppr, the steed with a golden mane
Stories
Invoked as god of vigilance, watching, and warning. Cited mythologically to justify the three-class human social order (as their father). Sailors at sea sometimes called on him as a lighthouse-figure.
