Theodosian Walls ยท Byzantine Fortifications โ€” Medieval Eastern Roman defensive marvel

The Walls of Constantinople are massive stone fortifications built to defend the capital of the Eastern Roman Empire. Expanded and repaired over centuries, these walls successfully protected the city against numerous sieges. The double-wall structure completed under Theodosius II is especially renowned.

Origin

Initially constructed in the late 4th and early 5th centuries, the walls underwent major expansion under Theodosius II between 413 and 447. They became a symbol of medieval European defense, withstanding multiple assaults until the Ottoman conquest.

Features

  • Double or triple defensive layers
  • Main wall over 12 meters tall
  • Moats and towers included
  • Stone and brick construction
  • Multiple gates and bastions

Usage

Served as a military fortress to defend the city and protect its inhabitants from enemy invasions.

Weakness

The advent of gunpowder and heavy artillery ultimately diminished the walls' effectiveness.
