The dark knight (暗黑騎士) is a class combining dark powers with melee combat. Opposite to the paladin, they contract with dark gods or demons instead of light deities, or burn their own life force to wield powerful dark magic. Featuring overwhelming offense and fear-inducing abilities, but at the cost of curses that constantly drain their own essence. Final Fantasy IV's Cecil Harvey is the most famous archetype, depicted as a class of trial to be reborn as a 'light knight.' A staple class of Japanese RPGs, appearing in FF, Dragon Quest, Disgaea — with dark armor, black cloaks, and red glowing eyes as visual trademarks. Popular as tragic heroes living in moral gray zones.
Origin
Created in fantasy literature as the counterpart to the paladin. Carries various narrative backgrounds such as fallen paladins or knights who made pacts with demons.
