Berserker
狂戰士 · Berserker — The frenzied warrior who surpasses limits through rage
The berserker (광전사) is a fierce combat class transcending human limits through rage and madness, fighting with massive two-handed weapons in minimal armor. The name comes from the Norse Berserkr warriors who, wearing bear skins (ber+serkr = bear shirt), entered battle in a frenzied state immune to pain and fear, fighting with savage abandon. They served as the elite guard of 9th-century Norwegian King Harald I and were described as Thor's avatars or werewolves. In fantasy RPGs they're implemented through rage meters that build up to unleash, exemplified by Diablo's Barbarian and D&D's Barbarian class.
Origin
Derived from the Viking tradition of Berserkr warriors dedicated to Odin. Records describe these frenzied warriors entering a rage state before battle through herbs or ritual.
Features
- Frenzy state: greatly increased attack and speed, decreased defense
- Ability to ignore pain and fatigue to continue fighting
- Specialization in large weapons (greatswords, axes)
- After frenzy ends, HP drains rapidly — risk of post-battle exhaustion
Usage
Concentrated burst damage in boss fights. A berserker in frenzy is the strongest single-target DPS on the battlefield.
Weakness
Risk of friendly fire during frenzy. Near-zero defense makes them vulnerable to instant death from focused attacks.
