The Scorpion is a large crossbow-like siege engine used from antiquity through the early medieval period. It was primarily deployed in siege warfare to attack enemy troops or fortifications, firing bolts, stones, or darts at long range. Its greater size and strength allowed for more destructive power than handheld crossbows.
Origin
Originating in ancient Rome and inspired by the Greek ballista, the Scorpion was adopted and modified throughout Europe and the Middle East.
Features
- Oversized crossbow design
- Capable of firing bolts, arrows, or stones
- High penetrating power
- Requires multiple operators
Usage
Usually mounted on fortifications or siege towers to target enemy infantry, cavalry, or siege equipment.
Weakness
Its significant size made it difficult to move, and reloading took considerable time and skill.
