Round Shield
Viking circular wooden shield
The round shield was the iconic defensive arm of Viking-age Scandinavian warriors (8th-11th centuries), a circular wooden board of 75-90cm diameter with a central iron boss and rear grip. Light at only 3-5kg thanks to thin linden or fir planks, it suited the aggressive, mobile Viking fighting style. The iron boss served double duty as a deflector and a striking weapon. In the shield wall formation — the cornerstone of Viking battle tactics — overlapping round shields created a nearly impenetrable barrier that allowed outnumbered Norse warriors to hold against superior forces.
