Ares

Ares · Greek God of War and Slaughter

Greek god of war. Son of Zeus and Hera, yet even his parents found him distasteful. Where Athena embodies strategy and just war, Ares is bloodlust, slaughter, and the frenzy of battle. Originally Thracian, he was viewed by Greeks as a barbarian god.

Origin

Born on Olympus but worshipped more fervently in Thrace and Scythia. In the Trojan War he sided with Troy but fled screaming when Diomedes wounded him with a spear.

Features

  • Adult god armored with helm, spear, and shield
  • Eagle, serpent, dog, and vulture as sacred animals
  • Rides a chariot stained with blood
  • Accompanied by sons Phobos (Fear) and Deimos (Terror)

Stories

Invoked by barbarian tribes before battle; patron of gladiators and combat sports. Greeks were reluctant worshippers but gave brief offerings before military campaigns.
