Origin
Directly derived from actual medieval European and Middle Eastern alchemy. The experiments to turn lead into gold gave birth to modern chemistry, and in fantasy it has evolved into a combat class through fusion with magic.

Not a specialist in any one area, but the extreme of the generalist who knows everything. A single word of advice from a sage can change the fate of a kingdom, and having one sage in a demon lord subjugation party completely transforms the strategy.
