Bard

吟遊詩人 · Bard — A wandering artist who changes the world with song and story

The bard is a wandering artist who moves people's emotions through song, music, and storytelling while immortally recording heroic deeds. The historical archetype is the bard class of Celtic society — scholars who memorized tribal history, genealogy, law, and mythology to pass down orally. Medieval Europe saw troubadours (southern France) and minnesingers (Germany) active in courts singing of love, war, and chivalry. In fantasy they become a class wielding magic through music, enhancing allies or charming/frightening enemies. D&D's Bard class is the prime example, with literary characters like Tolkien's Bilbo Baggins and Witcher's Dandelion.

Origin

Derived from the Bards and Skalds of Celtic and Viking culture. Medieval Europe's Troubadours are the historical archetype, and the class was developed with magic into an independent profession in D&D.
