Shuriken
The ninja's concealed throwing weapon
Shuriken are small Japanese throwing weapons in two types: star-shaped shaken and needle-shaped bo-shuriken. While depicted as a ninja's primary weapon in popular culture, they were actually secondary weapons used for distraction and harassment — NOT direct killing. Their primary role was diverting an enemy's attention or delaying pursuers during escape. Shaken measure approximately 10-15cm in diameter, bo-shuriken 15-25cm in length, and multiple could be concealed in clothing or sashes. Applying poison greatly increased their effectiveness.
Origin
A secondary throwing weapon used by ninja (shinobi) and warriors around Japan's Sengoku period (1467-1615). Origins are unclear, but the needle type (bo-shuriken) is believed to predate the star type (shaken).
