Ra
Ra · Egyptian Sun God — Creator and King of the Gods
Ancient Egyptian sun god and king of the gods. Each day he sails the solar barque Mesektet across the sky, then journeys at night through the underworld Duat to be reborn at dawn. Depicted with a falcon's head crowned by a sun disk encircled by the uraeus cobra; pharaohs were considered his sons.
Origin
Said to have arisen self-created from the primordial waters of Nun. In the New Kingdom he merged with Amun to become Amun-Ra, supreme god of the pantheon. The Heliopolitan theology made him father of Shu, Tefnut, Geb, and Nut — the cosmic family.
Features
- Falcon head crowned by sun disk and cobra
- Heka scepter and ankh of life
- Day barque (Mandjet) and night barque (Mesektet)
- Wages nightly war against the chaos-serpent Apep
Usage
The divine legitimacy of pharaohs — every king bore the title 'Son of Ra.' Invoked at sunrise and sunset rituals, and in funerary spells helping the dead board his barque for eternity.
