Indra

Indra · God of Thunder — Supreme Deity of Hindu Mythology

Indra (इन्द्र) is the chief deity of Indian Vedic mythology, ruling thunder, lightning, war, and rain. The most praised god of the Vedic era (1500-500 BCE), about 250 of the Rigveda's 1,028 hymns are dedicated to him. Riding a golden chariot, he wields the sacred weapon Vajra (thunderbolt) to slay the drought-dragon Vritra and release rivers, bringing rain to humanity as a heroic god. Though later Hindu tradition demoted him in favor of Vishnu and Shiva, Buddhism adopted him as Sakra/Taishakuten, the protector deity of the Buddhist cosmos venerated as a temple guardian in Korea and Japan.
