Shiva
Shiva · Hindu God of Destruction and Renewal — Cosmic Dancer
One of the Hindu Trimurti, presiding over destruction and renewal. Not merely a destroyer, he clears away the old to make space for new creation — the god of transformation. He is shown in twin poles: the meditating yogi and Nataraja, the cosmic dancer. He dwells on Mount Kailash with his consort Parvati.
Origin
Evolved from the Vedic storm god Rudra. Originally a fierce, wild deity, he gradually gained meditative and compassionate aspects until claiming his place among the Trimurti. At the end of each cosmic age, his dance of destruction (Tandava) opens the way for the next creation cycle.
Features
- Third eye on his forehead, throat blue from drinking poison
- Trident (trishula) and small drum (damaru)
- Mounted on the bull Nandi
- Ganges flows from his hair; serpent and crescent moon adorn him
Stories
Patron of yogis, ascetics, and meditators. Invoked in times demanding destruction and change — the death of the old self and birth of a new one. The Shiva lingam is the most common object of devotion in temples across India.
