Hippomobile

Hippomobile ยท Carriage โ€” Early self-propelled steam carriage

The Hippomobile was a steam-powered self-propelled carriage developed in the mid-19th century. As one of the first vehicles to move without horses, it is considered a forerunner of modern automobiles.

Origin

Invented in 1863 by ร‰tienne Lenoir in France, its name derives from 'hippo' (horse) and 'mobile' (to move). It reflects the eraโ€™s technological innovation and advances in steam engineering.

Features

  • Early steam engine integration
  • Self-propulsion without horses
  • Metal body and wheels
  • Top speed of about 18 km/h

Usage

Mainly used for urban transport and experimental runs. Its application was limited to demonstrations and technical trials, rather than widespread public use.

Weakness

The heavy steam engine and low fuel efficiency limited its commercialization. It had shorter range and was more difficult to maintain than horse-drawn carriages.
